It is said that if a groundhog coming from its hole sees a shadow, it will go back into its hole and winter season will continue for few more weeks, and if he does not go back spring season will arrive early On this day, ceremonies are held where people enjoy with their friends and families. This custom belong to Pennsylvania as per the records but now it is spread to lots of zones which include usa and Canada as well

History of Groundhog day
It is said that the Romain Legions are primary source of groundhog day tradition. They bought this tradition to the countries in the north. After that Germany also started following them and started believeing that if groundhog goes back to its hole then winter will continue else spring will come for sure. It is celebrated on 2nd February which is the same day which is celebrated for Candlemas Day.

It is the tradition came to us from romain empire which is very old so it may be possible that this prediction stopped working due to the modernization and increase in pollution and other climatic changes.
